Why is the Rubik’s Cube an “Educational Toy”?

Why is the Rubik’s cube an educational toy? After all you are only matching colors right? Nope… there is much more to it. In this video we will discuss the skills that you will learn and develop by solving a Rubik’s cube.

1) Break a big problem down into smaller steps

Solving the Rubik’s cube is a complex problem that generally can’t be solved in one step (except for a computer). You need to break the problem down into smaller steps. This is a common concept that can be transferred to Maths, Science and general problem solving.

2) Memorising techniques

Cubers develop techniques to memorise the moves (algorithms). Some people use rhymes, some use patterns, some people use a story for example: Escalator goes up – people get into the escalator and the escalator goes down (to put the first layer corner in place). These memorisation techniques transfer to school and work life.

3) Fine Motor skills

Over time you learn to use all your fingers on both your dominant and non-dominant hand to move and solve efficiently. These fine motor skills are useful for activities such as Touch Typing and Playing a musical instrument and are essential for any hands-on career.

4) Mental Health and confidence

Dopamine is released in our brains when we solve a problem. Additional to this, the degree of difficulty determines how much dopamine is released. Succeeding in a difficult problem not only makes you feel good, but it gives you the confidence to tackle other difficult challenges.
